For those professionals who plan to (re)organize a department or business process, to achieve their goals faster, we provide a professional CAIRO responsibility matrix, also known as: 'Responsibility assignment matrix', CAIRO or RACIO. The CAIRO responsibility matrix is a process management tool and basically a diagram which is used to describe the responsibilities of various roles in project tasks or deliverables.
CAIRO is an abbreviation for:
Consulted (sometimes Counsel): Those whose opinions are required; and with whom there is two-way communication.
Accountable(also known as: Final Approving Authority or Approver): There can only be one person who is ultimately accountable for the correct and thorough completion of each task or deliverable. The Accountable is the person who must sign off (Approve) on the work that the Responsible provides. Therefore, the Responsible is accountable to him/her.
Informed: those who are kept up-to-date about the decisions on the development, achievements of the task or deliverable; this is only one-way communication.
Responsible: Those who do the work to achieve the task. There is typically one role with a participation type of responsible, although others can be delegated to assist
Omitted (sometimes Out Of The Loop): Designating individuals or groups who are specifically not part of the task. Specifying that a resource does not participate can be as beneficial to a task's completion as specifying those who do participate.
There are a number of alternatives to the CAIRO participation types which are also explained in this template:
- RACI;
- RASCI model (RASIC);
- RACI-VS;
- DACI;
- etc.
