Music Manuscript Paper

A music manuscript is a handwritten source of music, typically inscribed on paper or parchment. If the manuscript features the composer's handwriting, it is called an autograph. Beyond musical notation, these manuscripts may encompass texts and images, providing a comprehensive insight into the composer's creative process.

The sheet music paper is commonly known as manuscript paper or, in U.S. English, staff paper. It is preprinted with staves, providing a ready canvas for musical notation. For most musical parts and even many scores, the ideal size for music manuscript paper is 9 x 12 inches (or 12 x 18 inches for Tabloid Extra size, folded in half). This size provides sufficient space for notation while maintaining readability. In cases where this preferred size is unavailable, 8.5 x 11 inches (UK/EU A4) paper can be used as an alternative.

Standard printer and copy paper, particularly white 24# and 20# variants, are the most common and generally work well for sheet music. However, if you desire to print on something other than plain white paper, it is recommended to choose paper with minimal or no texture. Parchment is often considered a suitable alternative, ensuring a smooth printing surface for the music notation.
