Details
An ex- student (has sibling at school) was nearly abducted last night while on an errand. About 5.40 pm the
child turned left on his bike into Sandham Street past St Joseph's Church on the north side of the road on
the footpath. A silver van with no rear windows and headlights on parked and pointing towards him. A man
got out and approached.ex-student. The child’s bike headlights were shining at him so he got a good look
at him. Child felt it was 'a bit weird' got on his bike and crossed the road towards St Joseph's School gate.
Child realised man was following and picked up speed. The man gave chase on foot and swore. Offender
ran back to van. Did a U-turn and continued to chase student down Sandham Street. Child turned at
boundary of school left into Staniland Street towards Glen Huntly Road. The van followed at speed. Child
sprinted towards Glen Huntly Road shopping strip and at library. He looked back to see van 'giving up'
chase, did u-turn and drove off. Parent contacted police and a statement was made. Child is to go to
Police St Kilda Road heaquarters today to do an identikit interview and try to identify type of van.
Perpetrator description: Muscly unkempt male with dark skin and a beard driving a silver van.
