Oceania printable flag templates

Oceania is the collective name for a large number of islands scattered across the Pacific Ocean. The region is typically divided into three major ethnographic island groups:

  • Polynesia
  • Melanesia
  • Micronesia

These printable flags are a great way to become more familiar with the flags of countries and territories belonging to Oceania—also known as Oceanica—such as New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and Australia.

While some geographic definitions restrict the continent strictly to Australia, Oceania remains a widely recognized regional term, and the term Australasia is also frequently used in this context.

Australia Flag and New Zealand Flag

One of the most fascinating aspects of Oceanian vexillology is the striking similarity between the flags of Australia and New Zealand. Both nations feature the distinctive dark blue British Blue Ensign design, prominently displaying the Union Jack in the canton (upper hoist quarter) to acknowledge their shared British colonial heritage.

Furthermore, both flags incorporate the iconic Southern Cross constellation—a powerful symbol of the Southern Hemisphere.

While Australia’s flag features six white stars (including five seven-pointed stars and one smaller five-pointed star) and a Federation Star beneath the Union Jack, New Zealand’s flag features four five-pointed red stars edged in white. Despite proposals over the years to change New Zealand’s design to avoid confusion, these two flags remain classic examples of how shared history and geography influence national symbols in Oceania.
