What is Kakeibo? How to create a Kakeibo Financial Budget to keep track of income and expenses for your household

Every day brings new activities and costs, and it's easy to lose track of what we are spending. Many of our day-to-day income and expenses are common and predictable. By gaining more financial insight, you might end up having some money left at the end of the month. The Kakeibo Journal (Pronounced ‘kah-keh-boh’) is a traditional Japanese method for your finances to help you keep track of your spending and saving goals to keep you motivated in your mission. Kakeibo was first popularised by Motoko Hani, Japan’s first female journalist, back in 1904. Kakeibo: The Japanese Art Of Saving Money is the first of its kind to be published in the English language, and a popular way to save money.

How does Kakeibo work?
The premise is simple: at the beginning of the month you think mindfully about how much money you would like to save, and what you need to do to achieve that goal, and keep track during the month.

The Kakeibo method consists of six steps:

  1. Check what comes in per month in income
  2. Check what your fixed costs are: rent, gas/light, etc.
  3. What is your target? Determine how much you want to set aside to reach your target
  4. Subtract your 2 and 3 from 1 and divide it by 4. What you are left with is what you will spend each week on food, gifts, etc.
  5. Fill in your spending as you go along, keep the target in mind.
  6. At the end of the month tally up your daily/weekly totals and check whether it has been successful and what your areas for improvement are if it has not been successful.

Keeping a family Kakeibo budget can provide numerous benefits, including:

  • Planning get's manageable; Maintaining a budget makes it easier to keep track of your spending and find areas where you may reduce costs. By doing so, you can prevent overspending and make wise financial judgments.
  • Save sufficient money; By understanding where your money is going, you can find opportunities to reduce spending. For instance, you might become aware that you are overspending on dining out or entertainment and decide to reduce those costs to save money.
  • A budget can assist you in making future plans, such as those related to establishing a family, purchasing a home, or taking a vacation. You may save money over time and be more ready for the future by setting a budget for these costs.
  • Stress reduction; Having a budget might help reduce some of the tension that families may experience because of money. You can make wise decisions and feel more in control of your financial situation when you have a thorough understanding of your finances.
  • Communication between family members must be improved in order to create and manage a budget. This can develop a sense of teamwork and collaboration within the family, which is also beneficial to improve the family relationship.
